The 15th season of the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College performing arts series kicks off this weekend with Caribbean artistes Arturo Tappin and Allison Hinds – gems in their own right.
The series, which spans from October 09 to May 2010, is being sponsored by: LIME, FirstBank, ARIFA, Harneys, Road Town Wholesale, Nagico, Ocean Spray, Smiths Ferry Service, Native Son Ferry Service,Ocean Spray, Barefoot Wine, Caribbean Insurers Ltd., and the Department of Culture.
Both of the opening artistes are of Barbadian heritage, and have performed in the Territory before.
Arturo Tappin is a smooth jazz and jazz/reggae saxophonist who has played with many recording artistes including Luther Vandross, Eddie Grant, the Wailer Band, Toots, Third World, Maxi Priest, and Dean Frasier.
He is based in New York, but is strongly linked to his homeland Barbados. Tappin is referred to as a cross between Teddy Pendergrass and Kenny G. He is also referred to as the smoothest, ‘saxies’t horn man the Caribbean has to offer.
Allison Hinds, on the other hand is a Bajan female artiste who is known as one of the most popular soca singers in the world. She has officially been given the nickname the “Queen of Soca.” Allison has many popular songs that topped charts even in countries which do not widely listen to soca.
She was born in London England and moved with her mother to her hometown in Barbados at the age 11. Allison produced her first hit in 1996 “Raggamuffin” a song that made her win road march of that year in the Crop over festival. The following year she repeated road march and also won the party monarch with another hit twister. Hinds was the first woman to ever win these titles in Barbados.
Tappin performs on Friday evening, while Hinds takes the stage Saturday.
