Thursday, February 04, 2010 – On January 28, 2010 the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) held a workshop for the Virgin Islands community. The workshop was hosted by the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC).
Mr. Shernon Osepa, Manager Regional Relations Caribbean of ICANN, and participants of the workshop discussed various ongoing developments of the global Internet. Topics included the global framework of Internet governance, operation of the system for resolving internet domain names, introduction of internationalised domain names (i.e., domain names accommodating non-Latin scripts), introduction of new global domain names and changes in the use of internet addressing. Mr. Osepa also presented the opportunities for the people of the Virgin Islands to be better involved in shaping the future of the Internet.
In addition to the public workshop, Mr. Osepa delivered a lecture to students and staff of the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College, met with the staff of the TRC and representatives of internet service providers.
Mr. Tomas Lamanauskas, CEO of the TRC, commented: “I was delighted to see very lively discussions during the events of the visit. This shows that our community is clearly interested in the global developments related to the future of the Internet and other communication technologies.” He added that “seeing such an interest we will continue to put efforts for the Virgin Islands’ community to become better involved in the global processes. In this context I really appreciate an ICANN’s promise to return later this year for a more detailed discussion on topics that stakeholders identified as being of a particular interest.”
