Asson, Smith take top titles in HLSCC Race Series

image

As anticipated, Steve Asson and Niayla Smith were declared overall champions in the men’s and women’s open categories, as the 2009 H. Lavity Stoutt Community College/Highland Spring Race Series concluded on Saturday 21 November at the Paraquita Bay Campus.

Smith, 14, became the youngest ever female open winner, dethroning Darwn Peters, who won the title seven years in a row from 2002 to 2008. Her performance this year also makes her the third fastest female in the history of the open division of the series.

Asson, who also won last year, covered the course in just under 11 seconds, but was not quick enough to break the record. He was followed by Naje Smith, older brother of Niayla, and Rasheed Richards, both of whom won in their respective age divisions.

For the service clubs, the Rotary of Tortola retained its title for the fifth consecutive year, while Cedar School Parents gained their first victory in the community partners division. Rhiannon Jones, member of the Cedar team, was awarded outstanding female for this category, and finished the season as the new record holder of the division, clocking 16:26.25.

2009 outstanding primary school male, Nicoy Hendrickson, led the way for Althea Scatliffe Primary throughout the series, but it was not enough to stop the Burning Flames of Francis Lettsome from winning for the second straight year. Team Willard Wheatley was third. This year’s outstanding female primary athlete, Marika Potter, of Francis Lettsome, ran 15:40.55, breaking the six-year record of Kanishque Todman in the final race.

Following a three-way tie with the secondary schools in 2008, Team-1 from Cedar International claimed the 2009 title, ending the six-year reign of Elmore Stoutt’s Carlisle House.

“It was certainly a successful series overall,” commented Race Director, Stephanie Russ Penn, at a brief presentation ceremony after the race. “Well over 170 persons trotted the race courses this year, providing exciting finishes in several of the categories.”

Ms. Russ Penn thanked the main sponsor, Highland Spring Mineral Water, distributed in the BVI by Tico, for its continued support to the event. She also conveyed special appreciation to the participants on both the Virgin Gorda and Tortola communities.

“Finally, I express unreserved gratitude to all the race assistants and volunteers, and especially to the media for continuing to promote the race series through their coverage,” she added.

HLSCC President, Dr. Karl Dawson, was among those witnessing the final race. He, too, briefly addressed the participants.
