The British Virgin Islands Health Service Authority (BVIHSA) celebrated the third annual Perioperative Nurses Day with an opening ceremony and educational sessions at Peebles Hospital under the theme, “Providing Safe Patient Care In the OR and Beyond”.
Dr. the Hon Orlando Smith, joined in the celebrations and commended the Operating Theatre team highly for their hard work and commitment to the organization over the years. He encouraged the nurses to remain team focused, as much can be accomplished when a team effort is implemented.
During her remarks, Director of Hospital Services, Mrs. Cedorene Malone-Smith paid homage to the contribution of nurses who work very hard and assist in the operating theatre and beyond. “For me, it is an honour to be asked to share in this celebration, and I take this opportunity to stress the importance to improve patient outcome in the nursing profession”.
The ceremony reached its climatic point with the presentation of flowers and plaque pen set to three staff members: Nurses Rupertha Ephraim and Janet Smith for their invaluable years of dedicated service to the Operating Theatre and beyond; and Mrs. Micah Lettsome from the Housekeeping Department, was also recognized for her commitment and passionate service to the operating Theatre over the years.
Nurses from the BVI attended AORN Conferences in Orlando, Florida, Anaheim California and Chicago, Illinois and have become members of AORN. They have been enlightened and are very enthusiastic to share experiences of ways in which the perioperative arena has grown and developed over the years. The Operating Theatre Staff has decided to join with their international colleagues in celebrating Perioperative Nurses Day locally.
Chief Medical of Staff, Dr. June Samuel congratulated the nurses for their perseverance and consistent efforts to continue to raise awareness on issues around perioperative care and stressed the importance of providing safe patient care in the OR and beyond, and this can only happen, “when we all adhere to documented processes in a consistent manner and take responsibility for the role that each of us play as healthcare providers.” Samuel said.
Perioperative Nurses Day was celebrated on November 10, 2009.
