Government committed to re-opening of Virgin Gorda Airport

Friday February 5th, 2010 - Road Town, Tortola – When the Taddy Bay Aerodrome on Virgin Gorda was closed last week, plans were well on the way for the construction of a new airport on the island starting in February this year.

Addressing members of the BVI Chamber of Commerce and Hotel Association during a meeting at The Moorings Mariner Inn on Thursday February 4th, Minister for Communications and Works Honourable Julian Fraser RA, revealed that this closure came just three days before the provisional license for the airport was due to expire.

In a statement on January 28th, Air Safety Support International, ASSI, the Governor's designated aviation regulator, confirmed the closure of the airport to commercial aircraft movements. ASSI said the Aerodrome Certificate for the airport was no longer valid because the British Virgin Islands Airport Authority has not maintained compliance with all the safety conditions of the certificate.

ASSI said this action was precipitated by the additional risks posed to the flying public by a new building development within the airport's protected areas.

“I am sure the unfortunate closure of the Aerodrome on our Sister Island of Virgin Gorda has created its own demands,” said Hon. Fraser, who also announced that he visited the site on Monday. “Let it be known that your Government is prepared to do whatever is necessary to facilitate the swift and sustained reopening of this important facility. We regard the Virgin Gorda airport as critical to our economy, businesses, residents and our status as a modern destination.”

Minister Fraser reiterated that the Government of Premier Honourable Ralph T. O’Neal remains committed to modernizing the three airports on Tortola, Virgin Gorda and Anegada.

Poor BVI on February 08, 2010 10:16:08 AM
Why are we trying to build airports, Concrete ghut, Community Centers and all the other non-emergency projects when the GOVT is already up shyt's creek with paying civil servants and building the hospital? We need to get one thing done at a time and stop trying to make it seem like we doing alot when we fully well know that the country and the entire world is experiencing a recession. Good governing will let the people of the country know how we stand financially and let us know what their plans are in regards to staying above water and on dry soil rather than getting more loans and putting us deeper and deeper in debt. Please remember that this aint the time to be seeking votes but its the time to show the country that you can keep us on the right paths.

This is really poor leadership,no-one has come out officially and tell the people of Virgin Gorda whats really happening. Our airport is closed, and people are out of work, and no-one cares. PLEASE VOTE LAURIE RHYMER FOR THE NINTH DISTRICT FOR NEEDED REPRESENTATION. REMEMBER THE NAME. HE IS FROM RIGHT HERE. LAURIE RHYMER.

Why cant ASSI find local person to trained. While i appreciate that the study of aviation is on the rise in the BVI i am sure that we can find persons to split between Airport and Civil Aviation. I am sure that we have talent, but who are other people to tell us that we are not talented. What we are not talented in, is the art of deception and colonialism. ASSI be honest, help the BVI landers get train so u all can go back to your homes and be happy with the work that you are doing. Thank you Sir

ASSI need to pack up and leave...There is no where that building is in the flt path. Further more the airport is here for the public that is the majority. I don't see where a building could be more important than the public. Check out other airports.
