Road Town roundabout lights will be removed, government official says

image Roundabout

Minister of Communications Julian Fraser has confirmed that the traffic lights located at the Road Town roundabout, permanently turned off since October 2009, will be removed from that area.

The government official, refused to give a timeline for the removal or  an indication as to whether the lights would be transferred elsewhere. “We at the Ministry are working on some things which the public will know in the not too distant future,” he told BVI News.

On October 26, 2009 the Territory’s leader Ralph T.O Neal declared that the roundabout lights had been permanently turned off.
He opined that the lights should be installed at a location “that really needs them, and that is the area by the Moorings.”

That announcement bought an end to public discussion on the roundabout which had been spurred on by the announcement of the lights, and suggestions concerning the moving of the roundabout. Public debate heated up following the commissioning of the lights on August 20, 2009. This led to heated debates at public meetings, and resulted in numerous verbal petitioning and lobbying by members of the public.

The annoyance of the drivers forced the Government to turn the lights off on September 7, 2009. However, even though the lights were off the public still aired their views on the matter as it was rumored that the lights would eventually be turned back on.

BUT 'ISLAND PEOPLE' KNOW BETTER AND THAT CAN NOT BE TAKEN AWAY FROM THEM. ...WHAT A SHAME. WHERE THERE IS NO VISION, BVI-LANDERS WILL PERISH.

When they are taken down, one of the lights should be erected at the entrance to Pleasant Valley with one red light permanently on.

It was a human mistake so stop all the negativeness ,these things happen all the time in other country .Sometime we have to pay to learn. At least we have a Leader thats listening to the people and not one thats hanging out and partying with the high class people.

I wrote, prior to the installation, that it was a bad idea especially since governments everywhere are installing round-a-bouts because traffic moves smoother than with lights....I told you so!

A careless and wasteful use of scarce dollars. This is an action that could/should have been avoided. Technology was available to model the lights before they were installed. Instead, the decison was rushed. And the consequence is professional embarrashment. Too much financial and personal capital was expended with no return. To avoid future avoidable missteps perhaps, the Premier should give all projects a sanity check earlier, not when the goat has bolted from the pen. The Minister of CWI is probably a capable architect and probably can be a effective administrator. But boy he needs to tone down the arrogance with a strong dose of humility.

Way too many big mistakes coming from governemnt with decisions regarding the country's infrastructure, it's residents both local and expat, its toursim and financial service industries. Has anyone been paying attention?? Seems there is need of some agency to govern those with decision making powers.
