Minister of Communications Julian Fraser has confirmed that the traffic lights located at the Road Town roundabout, permanently turned off since October 2009, will be removed from that area.
The government official, refused to give a timeline for the removal or an indication as to whether the lights would be transferred elsewhere. “We at the Ministry are working on some things which the public will know in the not too distant future,” he told BVI News.
On October 26, 2009 the Territory’s leader Ralph T.O Neal declared that the roundabout lights had been permanently turned off.
He opined that the lights should be installed at a location “that really needs them, and that is the area by the Moorings.”
That announcement bought an end to public discussion on the roundabout which had been spurred on by the announcement of the lights, and suggestions concerning the moving of the roundabout. Public debate heated up following the commissioning of the lights on August 20, 2009. This led to heated debates at public meetings, and resulted in numerous verbal petitioning and lobbying by members of the public.
The annoyance of the drivers forced the Government to turn the lights off on September 7, 2009. However, even though the lights were off the public still aired their views on the matter as it was rumored that the lights would eventually be turned back on.
