It was a family affair on Saturday evening as scores turned out to see the lighting of the Christmas tree at Sir. Olva Georges Plaza - an event signaling the commencement of the festive season.
Organized by the Lions Club Tortola, the lighting ceremony also provided musical entertainment by several groups including Road Town Wholesale choir, Adina Donovan, Band of Faith among others.
Lion member Governor David Pearey stressed the point that the non-governmental organization’s motto which is “to serve” can be borrowed during this festive season to help others in these difficult times.
“This is a season of illumination,” he said.
The Governor jokingly added that each year the Lions Club gets more ambitious in decorating the tree and appreciated the fact that there is a train set, “which doesn’t work”.
President of the Club, Ronald Berkeley, said at Christmas one must reflect the significance of the season and “amidst the hustle and bustle we must pay homage to the One who is and who will be.”
“When a baby was born in the manger…there was a ripple effect …a milestone entrance that has foreseen time split into two,” Berkeley stated.
The Pearey ladies – Governor Pearey’s wife and daughter – pressed the switch to light the almost 10 foot tree, which glowed with blue lights.
Delivering the opening prayer was Pastor Vankys Isaacs who advised the gathering to exercise prudence. Vice President of the Club, Kamika Forbes, also made remarks.
The event was sponsored by Alphonso Warner Insurance Agency, Colonial Insurance Agency, NAGICO, Mossack Fonseca & Co. (BVI) Ltd, Medicure Ltd, Eureka Medical Clinic, Tortola Concrete Ltd, Nibbs Auto Sales & Parts, Coverdale Trust and Reliance Pharmacy.
