BVI News has been informed that Ajit George, the managing director of one of Virgin Gorda’s luxury resorts, has resigned and Doug Riegels has taken over the reins of the resort’s operations.
According to unconfirmed reports, George handed in his resignation last week before going on his vacation and is currently off island.
Meanwhile, the new managing director met with the staff on December 18.
When BVI News contacted Binny Sebastian, the general manager of the resort, he was tightlipped about the issue but said, “Everything is going to move on with the operations of the resort.”
Over the years, George has volunteered thousands of hours to various charitable causes and non-profit organizations in both the United States and the BVI.
In 1989, he became the Founding Chairman of Meals On Wheels Delaware and launched the highly successful Meals From The Masters Culinary Weekend in 1998. During the ten years that he chaired these major culinary events before he retired in 2007, this event raised more than $4.2 million for Meals On Wheels in Delaware.
The BVI Charitable Fund of the Community Foundation (BVI) Limited was initially established in 2008 to create new and innovative fund-raising events to benefit various charities in the BVI by attracting support from both outside and within the British Virgin Islands while at the same time promoting this destination to potential new visitors.
The Virgin Islands Winemakers Dinners are organized by the BVI Charitable Fund, which George co-chairs with the Premier, Ralph T. O’Neal.
Sources have suggested that the resignation may have been prompted by what appeared to be a conflict of interest.
Meanwhile, before his new appointment Riegels, in December 2008, was elected by the members of Nail Bay Community Association Limited (NBCA) in Virgin Gorda to serve as one of the directors. He’s also a director on the Anegada Beach Club Limited.
