Wind turbines for BVI

image

PETER ISLAND, BVI - Peter Island has announced plans for the purchase and installation of two 250 kW wind turbines on a southeast facing ridge of the small, mostly resort-occupied British Virgin Island located five miles south of Tortola.

The Peter Island Wind Project will be the first commercial wind turbine installation in the British territory and will save more than 100,000 gallons of diesel fuel per year or approximately $250,000 annually.

Peter Island will operate off the local government power grid with its own new diesel power plant and desalination facility at Stoney Bay. A wind study was conducted and calculated mean wind speed on the site at 14 mph. It is anticipated two turbines will provide in excess of 60% of the peak load energy requirements on the island.

Tim Currey, RA, NCARB, Director of Special Projects, URS Corporation states, “The Peter Island Wind Turbine Project will be a shining example of sustainability in the Caribbean environment. The project is a ‘win-win’ for all; The environment, Peter Island, the Resort and the entire BVI community. We are thrilled to be a part of this process.”

The wind turbine model selected is a WES30 Mk1 Hybrid from Netherlands-based, Wind Energy Solutions (WES). The turbine installation will be coordinated by Wolverine Power Solutions of Zeeland, MI and Kraus-Manning, Inc. (KMI) – Tortola will handle the Construction Management scheduling and services. Additional connectivity and controls design will be coordinated by Atlantic Controls based out of Fort Lauderdale, FL.

Proposed installation date for the wind turbines is scheduled for January 2010.

Opportunity knocking us in the head!. on September 21, 2009 08:10:41 PM
The BVI is continually being blessed (one more time) with development opportunities. Hopefully, planners are looking at such locations as Anegada for this, as a potentially major source and supplier of power for the territory. I would think investors, including BVI residents may want to participate in such a future investment opportunity. I know I would...

As a Peter Islander let me inform you that we are not on the BVI electrical grid. We generate our own electricity. We do not need permission from BVIEC.

This is great but unfortunately it's like that saying "a lot of sound and fury signifying nothing". There is atleast one other entity that has installed an alternative power source but they cannot turn it on because BVIEC does not have the technical skills on board to interact with these alternate sources. So even if someone gets permission to install the alternate source, they still may not be able to use it. Which is why I find it interesting that Hon. Omar is in Europe at an energy convention, and Mr. Abraham from BVIEC is with him (that's atleast a plus). The money they spent on that trip alone could probably have funded getting training or the ability to work with these alternate sources of energy. This trip to Europe is just a pork barrel benefit for the travellers. A free trip at a lovely time of year to Europe in exchange for attending some meetings. Unless the correct technical things are done at BVIEC, we still cannot reap the benefits of the cost of the trip nor the benefit of the information imparted to the travellers. Peter Island might get an award for going green, but they can't benefit from their greeness either. Sorry for sounding negative but while the actions taken are sound, the ground work to make the actions work is just not in place.

While I applaud Peter Island for their active pursuit in sustainability in terms of energy production; I am confused as to how they got planning permission for this! Reason is homeowners and other businesses are not allowed by law to produce their own electricity generation - which is down-right BS! With fossil fules depleting at a fast pace and climae change the issue of many national governments why can't homeowners install PV's and turbines for their own generation? Any surpplus electricity generated from thes homes could go to the National grid at a cheap cost to supplement the already unsatisfying BVIEC production!
There is wave technology available that we in the BVI could benefit from and be seen as LEADERS in the CAribbean when it comes to sustainable electricity generation! Dominica and St.Kitts are already engaging in alternatvie energy production - yet we in the BVI keep adding more and more stress to the already arcane and dilapidated systems we have at Pockwood Pond & Long Bush. Why none of these politicians are engaging this issue baffles me - but then again if they can't get Water & Sewerage issues sorted out what do you expect!

This is great! Seems so long ago I read an article say we could power the whole BVI from wind power on Anegada alone.

Holy Enlightenment Batman! About time.
Great example and lets hope this spreads across the BVI. It has to be sensible and it has to be the right move. Well done PI.

FINALLY it appears that people are catching on to the fact that BVI gets lots of wind, sun and waves at no extra cost. We can be making the most of these blessings and reducing considerably our dependence on foreign oil, safeguarding the country's future. Even, heaven forbid, showing the rest of the World how things can and should be done.... Let's take this opportunity.
